Germany to pay local US base staff during US shutdown

The German government has pledged to temporarily cover the salaries of around 11,000 German nationals working at US military bases in Germany who might be impacted by the ongoing US federal government shutdown.

A spokesperson for the German Finance Ministry said the government would initiate an unscheduled expenditure to ensure October pay is delivered on time, and that Berlin expects to be reimbursed once the US resumes payments.

The move is described as a gesture of solidarity with the US armed forces stationed in Germany and their civilian workforce.
