China Pledges to Protect Foreigners as Japan Advises Caution

Beijing has pledged on Tuesday to protect the safety of foreign nationals in China, following a travel advisory issued by Tokyo urging Japanese citizens to exercise caution amid a diplomatic dispute.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China said the Chinese government “has always and will continue to protect the safety of foreign citizens in China in accordance with the law.”

This declaration comes as talks between Japanese and Chinese foreign ministry officials take place in Beijing to defuse tensions triggered by comments from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.

Japan warned its nationals to avoid large gatherings and stay alert amid concerns that the elevated diplomatic strain could spill into incidents affecting visitors.

China’s reassurance is meant to allay those concerns and preserve its image as a safe destination for foreign nationals.
