The government of Spain has removed its ambassador to Israel, according to a decision published Wednesday in the country’s official state gazette.
The move effectively lowers the level of diplomatic representation between the two countries.
Following the decision, Spain’s embassy in Tel Aviv will be headed by a chargé d’affaires, according to a source at the Spanish Foreign Ministry.
A chargé d’affaires typically leads an embassy when an ambassador has been withdrawn or the post is vacant.
The development comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
