A U.S. Navy helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles at an Iranian vessel after it approached the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Persian Gulf.
The incident occurred after the aircraft carrier’s deck gun initially fired warning shots but failed to hit the ship.
U.S. officials say the helicopter then engaged the vessel to neutralise the threat as it continued moving toward the carrier.
The strike comes amid rising tensions in the Gulf, where U.S. and allied naval forces are on heightened alert following escalating hostilities with Iran.
Further details about damage or casualties have not yet been released.
