Israel killed a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut on Wednesday in a naval strike, the IDF announced. Hajj Yusuf Ismail Hashem, commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front unit, was eliminated in an operation carried out by Israeli naval troops.
The IDF described the Southern Front unit as responsible for terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and combat operations against Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon.
The strike killed at least five people and wounded 26, according to Lebanese officials.
It comes as Israel continues to push deeper into southern Lebanon, with Defence Minister Israel Katz announcing that homes in the south would be demolished and that displaced Lebanese residents would not be permitted to return.
More than 1,200 people have been killed in Lebanon and over one million displaced since Israeli operations there escalated on 2 March.
