IAEA Declares Iran in Non‑Compliance with Nuclear Safeguards for First Time in 20 Years

The IAEA’s 35‑nation Board of Governors passed a resolution during its June 9–13 meeting, formally declaring Iran in non‑compliance with its NPT nuclear safeguards obligations for the first time in nearly two decades.

The resolution, introduced by the U.S., UK, France, and Germany, cites Iran’s failure since 2019 to cooperate on undeclared nuclear materials discovered at multiple sites.

Although the measure stops short of referring the matter to the UN Security Council, it signals possible escalation if Iran does not change course.

Iran denies wrongdoing, calling the resolution politically motivated.
