Indonesia to buy 42 Chinese J-10C fighters in historic shift

Indonesia’s Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin announced that Jakarta will purchase 42 Chengdu J-10C jets from China, marking its first major military procurement from a non-Western nation.

The deal is valued at over USD 9 billion with funding already approved by the finance ministry.

The acquisition comes amid a broader push to modernise the Indonesian Armed Forces and signals a potential realignment of defence partnerships beyond traditional Western suppliers.

Analysts warn the move may stir geopolitical tensions in Southeast Asia, especially given China’s rising influence in the region.
