ISIS resurges in eastern Syria

ISIS has reemerged in eastern Syria, taking advantage of the reduced U.S. presence to expand recruitment and launch new attacks, U.S. and Kurdish commanders told The Wall Street Journal.

American troop numbers in the region have fallen below 1,000, creating a security vacuum that ISIS has quickly exploited.

Kurdish officials warn the group is regrouping in Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa, raiding weapons depots and targeting local leaders.

The militants are also stepping up propaganda and recruitment drives in rural Sunni areas, raising fears that the terror network is rebuilding its capabilities across Syria and beyond.
