Over 2,200 killed in powerful Afghanistan earthquake

More than 2,200 people have been killed and around 5,000 injured after a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday.

Authorities said the majority of casualties were recorded in Kunar province, where villages suffered widespread destruction.

Rescue operations are ongoing as officials warn the death toll could rise further.

The quake is among the deadliest to hit Afghanistan in recent years, adding to the country’s humanitarian crisis as emergency services struggle with limited resources.

International aid organisations have begun mobilising support to assist survivors and provide medical care to the injured.
