Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025, at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
His death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell at 9:45 AM local time, following the Pope’s final Urbi et Orbi blessing on Easter Sunday.
Francis had recently been hospitalised for double pneumonia, from which he was discharged in March.
As the first Latin American and Jesuit Pope, his 12-year papacy was marked by advocacy for the poor, environmental stewardship, and efforts towards Church reform.
World leaders, including King Charles III, have expressed profound sorrow at his passing.
