Pro-Assad Shia Islamist Sentenced To Life In Germany

A German court in Stuttgart sentenced a Syrian man to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity committed during Syria’s civil war.

The individual, whose name remains undisclosed, was found guilty of murder and torture while serving in a pro-Assad Shia militia in Bosra al-Sham.

The court determined that his actions aimed to terrorise and displace the local Sunni population.

The conviction was based on testimonies from 30 witnesses.

This case is part of Germany’s broader application of universal jurisdiction, allowing prosecution of severe crimes committed abroad.

Previously, in January 2022, former Syrian intelligence officer Anwar Raslan was sentenced to life imprisonment by a German court for overseeing torture and murders at Damascus’s Branch 251 detention centre.

These prosecutions underscore Germany’s commitment to holding perpetrators of war crimes accountable, irrespective of where the crimes occurred.
