Seven men have been arrested in a major counterterrorism operation in south west Sydney after police acted on intelligence suggesting a violent act may have been imminent.
Tactical officers intercepted multiple vehicles in Liverpool, ramming a white hatchback with Victorian plates before detaining its occupants at gunpoint.
Businesses and a nearby primary school were briefly placed in lockdown as a precaution.
Police say all seven suspects are from Victoria and already known to authorities there.
Officers stress there is no ongoing threat to public safety and that, at this stage, there is no confirmed link to the December 14 Bondi Beach terror attack.
