Sweden has announced a major defence increase, committing an extra 30 billion dollars over the next decade.
This will raise military spending to 3.5 percent of GDP and civil defence spending to 1.5 percent, reaching NATO’s new goal of 5 percent.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson confirmed the plan will be partially funded through borrowing.
Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson defended the move by saying it is about protecting the next generation so “our kids do not have to learn Russian.”
The bill is expected to pass ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in June.
