White House Directs Agencies to Prepare for Mass Firings

The White House has instructed federal agencies to ready plans for large-scale firings should a government shutdown occur next week.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) memo asks agencies to identify programs where discretionary funding will lapse and propose reductions in force beyond typical furloughs.

Democrats accuse the administration of using the directive as a political intimidation tactic amid a budget standoff.
