Former President Sarkozy Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

A Paris court has handed former French President Nicolas Sarkozy a five-year prison sentence after finding him guilty of criminal conspiracy related to alleged funding from Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya to support his 2007 presidential campaign.

The ruling makes him the first head of state in modern France to be given a jail term under such circumstances.

Though he plans to appeal, the court said he must serve even while challenging the verdict.

Co-defendants, including close allies and former ministers, also received convictions.

Sarkozy denied wrongdoing, calling the case a political “injustice,” and vowed to fight the decision.
