Spain has pushed back on U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the country be expelled from NATO over its defence spending shortfalls.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his cabinet argue Spain should be judged by capacity and contribution, not rigid GDP targets.
The controversy stems from NATO’s new 5% of GDP defence spending goal, which Spain has resisted on fiscal and political grounds.
