Opposition Claims Around 700 Dead in Tanzania Election Unrest

The main opposition party in Tanzania has claimed that approximately 700 people have died during protests sparked by the country’s recent election, according to a statement given to AFP.

The breakdown offered by party spokesman John Kitoka places about 350 deaths in Dar es Salaam and more than 200 in Mwanza, with the remainder from other regions.

Official sources have neither confirmed nor refuted these numbers, and rights monitors cite far lower confirmed death tolls so far.

The government has shut down internet access, imposed curfews in major cities, and deployed military troops as unrest spreads.
