Sir Keir Starmer faces a Commons vote today on whether to refer him to the Privileges Committee over claims he misled parliament about Lord Mandelson’s appointment as Washington ambassador.
Former Foreign Office chief Sir Philip Barton told MPs that Downing Street was “uninterested” in the security vetting process and that the announcement was made before checks were completed, contradicting Starmer’s repeated claim that “due process” was followed.
Mandelson was sacked last year over his close ties to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
The Privileges Committee previously ended Boris Johnson’s career over partygate. Starmer dismissed the bid as a “stunt” ahead of the May elections.
