Former Moldovan intelligence officer investigated for treason in Romania

Alexandru Bălan, a former officer in Moldova’s Intelligence and Security Service, is under investigation by Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT).

He is accused of treason for allegedly passing classified state information to KGB officers in Belarus.

Romanian prosecutors confirmed that Bălan has been transferred to Bucharest for questioning as part of the case.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the nature of the information he is suspected of leaking.

The investigation highlights growing regional concerns over espionage networks linked to Russia and Belarus amid heightened security tensions in Eastern Europe.
