Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that Tehran is no longer viable as the country’s capital because severe water shortages have made the city unsustainable.
He said the situation has become “extremely critical” and that the government now has no choice but to begin planning a full relocation.
Tehran is facing its worst drought in decades, with reservoir levels plunging and major dams supplying the city running close to empty.
Officials say the crisis has reached a point where long-term habitation and government operations can no longer be guaranteed.
The relocation, if carried out, would be one of the biggest political shifts in Iran’s modern history.
