Lebanon Challenges Hezbollah’s Gun Monopoly

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has demanded that Hezbollah surrender its weapons, calling the group’s private arsenal the biggest obstacle to building a functioning state.

Salam said Hezbollah failed to deter Israel or protect Lebanon, and that only the national army must control decisions of war and peace.

His remarks mark the firmest stance yet by a Lebanese leader against Hezbollah’s parallel military power.

Hezbollah operatives dismissed Salam’s demand and mocked the idea that the group would disarm, reinforcing criticism that it answers to Tehran rather than Beirut.

The confrontation exposes Lebanon’s core problem: a country trying to act sovereign while a militia laughs in its face.
