EU fines Elon Musk’s X €120 million over transparency breaches

The European Commission has imposed a €120 million fine on X (formerly Twitter), owned by Elon Musk, ruling that the platform violated transparency rules under the Digital Services Act.

The Commission found X guilty of three major violations: misleading users via its purchasable “blue checkmark” verification badge, failing to maintain transparent advertising records, and refusing to grant researchers access to public data.

Officials said the fine marks the first enforcement under Europe’s new digital-law framework and aims to protect users from scams, manipulation, and misinformation.
