A devastating fire and explosion tore through Le Constellation bar in the Crans-Montana ski resort early on New Year’s Day, killing around 40 people and injuring roughly 100, most seriously, according to Swiss police and the Italian foreign ministry.
The blaze broke out at about 1.30am during a crowded celebration, rapidly engulfing the venue and trapping many inside.
Hospitals in the Valais region and beyond are overwhelmed as victims with severe burns and trauma are treated or transferred.
Police say the fire’s cause is under investigation but there is no indication of arson or terrorism.
Rescue teams remain on site and efforts continue to identify the dead and notify families.
This marks one of Switzerland’s deadliest civilian disasters in recent memory.
