Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sharply criticised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after Carney appeared to endorse a protester’s accusation of “genocide” in Gaza.
During a rally in Calgary, a heckler shouted, “There’s a genocide happening in Palestine,” to which Carney responded, “I’m aware. That’s why we have an arms embargo.”
Netanyahu responded on X, stating: “Canada has always sided with civilisation. So should Mr. Carney.
But instead of supporting Israel, a democracy that is fighting a just war with just means against the barbarians of Hamas, he attacks the one and only Jewish state.”

Carney later clarified his remarks, claiming he didn’t hear the word “genocide” and was merely referencing Canada’s suspension of certain arms export permits to Israel.
The incident has intensified tensions between the two nations, with critics accusing Carney of undermining Israel’s right to self-defence and emboldening Hamas sympathisers.
