Sweden Pays $82,000 to Acquitted ISIS Suspect

Sweden has awarded $82,000 in compensation to 51-year-old Walid al-Zaytun, a Syrian asylum seeker acquitted of war crimes.

Al-Zaytun was accused of participating in a 2015 ISIS execution in al-Sawana, Syria, where he allegedly tied a victim to a lamp post before another individual killed the man with a spear.

The Blekinge District Court acknowledged his ISIS involvement but ruled the evidence insufficient for conviction.

The case relied heavily on testimonies gathered by the Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA), which the court criticised for inconsistencies and potential witness manipulation.

Al-Zaytun, who arrived in Sweden in 2015, spent over a year in pre-trial detention.
