Trump Slaps 245% Tariffs on China Amid Escalating Trade War

President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs of up to 245% on Chinese imports, escalating tensions in the ongoing trade dispute.

The move follows China’s export restrictions on critical minerals like gallium and rare earth elements, which are vital for sectors such as defence and electronics.

In response, China has increased tariffs on U.S. goods to 125% and appointed Li Chenggang as its new trade negotiator to navigate the escalating situation.

Trump has also initiated a national security review into the U.S.’s reliance on imported critical minerals, aiming to bolster domestic production.

The White House maintains that these measures are essential to protect national interests, while China criticises them as unlawful and counterproductive.
