In a stunning turn of events during last night’s by-elections, the Labour Party clinched victories in both Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire, seats previously considered Tory strongholds.
This double victory represents a significant setback for Rishi Sunak and his party.
In Tamworth, Labour’s Sarah Edwards celebrated one of the biggest swings in British politics.
Similarly, in Mid Bedfordshire, the Labour Party managed to secure a seat that was formerly held by Nadine Dorries.
These triumphs are emblematic of a broader political shift, and the results have been described as “woeful” for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Tory Party.
Both constituencies signal a substantial swing towards Labour, reflecting a dwindling public confidence in the Conservatives’ governance.
Smaller and alternative parties, however, did not gain from this opportunity as Reform UK failed to get above 5%.
This development could potentially escalate Tory rebellion against Downing Street as party strategist regroup to plan for the upcoming general election.
Tory chairman Greg Hands said this morning, “We need to work harder, we need to make sure that people get the Government message that we are delivering.”
Meanwhile Labour leader Keir Starmer said, “These are phenomenal results that show Labour is back in the service of working people & redrawing the political map. Winning in these Tory strongholds shows that people overwhelmingly want change and they are ready to put their faith in our changed Labour Party to deliver it.”
